Live Earth 07-07-07

What good would this blog be unless we discussed the 10,000 simultaneous concerts happening around the globe tomorrow?! It's all about the three 7's! July 7, 2007, it only happens once, and Former US Vice-President Al Gore will be making the most of it. http://liveearth.org/

I am sure many of you blog readers have seen "An Inconvenient Truth." An excellently done film that shows the impact of our "carbon footprint" (a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide or CO emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels) on our world. If you look back through time, many years before we were around, you can see the changes happening in our climate, and in our geography, that point to a very scary ending for all. Kilimanjaro has almost lost its ability to keep the title "the snows of Kilimanjaro," as it's noteworthy glacier has almost completely disappeared.

From Bangladesh to Zambia, this online guide shows how countries around the world are being impacted by climate change http://uk.oneworld.net/guides/climatechange/impact. Personally, I will be visiting the Maldives within my lifetime. Standing only one meter above sea level, next lifetime, they will be a regular Atlantis, a lost paradise under the sea.

So be a part of Live Earth and head out to the nearest gathering or concert in your local area. Or if you aren't in New York, London, Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Tokyo, Sydney, and Hamburg, where the main concerts will be rocking out, then stay at home and keep your carbon footprint low by tuning into your XM or Sirius satellite radio for coverage, or even your TV (Live Earth will be on NBC, BRAVO, MSNBC, CNBC, and even Telemundo). Online coverage will be streaming at www.LiveEarth.MSN.com

"I honestly believe that the role I can most usefully play is to change the minds of the American people."- Al Gore

It is hard to drive around Orlando knowing that you are only contributing to ruining the Earth. I have always been disgusted by the number of Americans who drive huge SUVs needlessly, but people are unwilling to give up the status,
particularly in Windermere.

While the concerts do generate a lot of buzz about the effect we are having, I do not think people will change until the environmentally responsible choice makes sense economically. At this point a number of hybrids, including Al Gore's, only use the hybrid electricity component to make a V6 or V8 engine as pollutive as a V4.

Having lived in Europe, I really think that the solution to many of America's problems is a change in the way we design cities. Rather than building structures around roads, we should build roads around structures. In Europe everything is close, so the people do not rely as heavily on cars.

Granted, Europe is more densely populated in general, but I still think we should go back to basics by designing towns rather than strip malls. As an urban planning enthusiast I really just want us to go back to basics: neighborhoods. The benefits of a change in our mindset are innumerable and very tangible. If only the rest of America would have such a realization...
